Regulations / Batteries
The battery passport is already law.
Regulation (EU) 2023/1542 requires a passport for industrial, EV and LMT batteries from February 2027. It is the clearest available preview of how DPP obligations get enforced.
Who it applies to
Industrial batteries above 2 kWh, electric-vehicle batteries and light-means-of-transport batteries placed on the EU market.
- Industrial > 2 kWh
- EV batteries
- LMT batteries
What the passport carries
A unique identifier resolving to both public and restricted-access data, with lifecycle state included.
- Carbon footprint declaration
- Material composition and critical raw materials
- Recycled content shares
- State of health and performance data
Public vs. restricted data
Not every field is public. Access tiers are explicit — a pattern other product groups are expected to follow.
- Public consumer view
- Restricted regulator and recycler view
- Role-based access
Why it matters to non-battery brands
The battery passport sets the technical precedent: unique identifiers, structured data, tiered access, published on the open web.
- Identifier-first architecture
- Tiered disclosure
- Machine-readable data
